The League: BASEBALL

I have to admit this weeks post assignment from the league makes a me a bit uncomfortable.  It takes me out side of my comfort zone.  Baseball, and sports in general, make me feel a bit uneasy!  However I can't fear a little bit of unease, the League has called and I must answer.  So what am I going to write about?

I thought about this for a while.  This is actually the second post I have drafted!  I wasn't feeling right about the first post (although I might still release that too at some point.)  So I tried to think about anything baseball.  I thought about my Doctor who fan friend who is a huge St Louis Cardinals fan.  That always amazes me.  For years the two things have been so segmented and different it is hard for me to combine them!

The next thing I thought about was video games.  I thought about Baseball video games that I have played.  I couldn't think of any.  I usually don't play sports games and when I do they are Basket ball games (I understand those a little better than the rest.)  But then I did remember ONE game back in the 80s called Basewars which dealt with robots playing baseball.  I loved that game.  It was a multiple renter!

At some point. though it struck me, the thing that I most enjoy about baseball is . . . Abbott and Costello.  Yes I am going to pick the cliche answer and go with "Who's on first."

The first time I ever saw this sketch I was fairly young, and it was just a part of it that was in one of those "100 funniest moments" types of shows.  I have to admit I didn't get it.  It went over my head, WAY over my head, but now I am doubled over laughing.

It is amazing how something so simple can be so funny, AND so memorable.  you can ask just about anyone, "who's on first"  and they are going to know what you are talking about.  Its the kind of phrase that you wear on Tee shirts and get a lot of complements about!

This sketch is one of the funniest, and most simplistic comedy sketches out there.  The comic timing is fantastic, and the characters come through perfectly.  I wish Saturday night live would go back to this kind of sketch sometimes.

Take a look at Abbot and Costello as they do, what is probably their best known work!

  1. Good call. Who's on First is still one of the greatest comedy routines ever created. It's cliche for a reason. Bud & Lou really sell it, too.
