The League: Top 10 Favorite Movies!

After a week off the league has called again and I must answer!  This week it is a little less involved but still not easy!  What are your top 10 favorite movies?

I keep my top three on tap fairly easily, but of late the ranking has been a bit off so I am not going at this by ranking any of these.  I will put the three I usually say on the top but they do not represent my top 3 favorites any more.  Also I am going to have a lot of cliche favorite nerd movies on this list.  What can I say. . . I'm a cliche

The three that were at the top of my list for years were these:

Wayne's World - one of the first more grown up movies that I actually got.  Plus I really like Dana Carvy!

Empire records - There was a summer (probably 1997 or 98 where I rented this movie and probably watched it 15 times in one weekend.  I don't know why but it just kind of spoke to me!  and it still does!

Bill and Ted's Excellent adventure - I remember begging my mom to take me to the theater to see this movie, and I never regretted it . . . but I think she does.  For me it was about time travel and it was an obvious riff on doctor who. . . so I loved it!

Movies that make a bit more sense:

Flash Gordon - What is not to love about this movie. . . plus Brian Blessed as a hawk man!

Monty Python's search for the Holy Grail - Saw this movie for tghe first time when I was in 8th grade, after all of my friends talked about it so much.  Also a life changer.  I got a  VHS copy at media play and the rest is history. . . there is a reason it is one of the most quoted movies ever!

The Star Wars Franchise - Really I should just put star Wars.  I love the three original but the first one has always spoken to me the most.  The early days of this movie were some of the best things out.  the marvel comics I think made it a much more exciting story than what we eventually got.

this trailer is really interesting too. . . it really reminds you that they really had no idea about what the movie really was!

Masters of the Universe - A favorite as a kid for obvious reasons although at the time I didn't get the movie.  Actually until recently I didn't get it!  Now that I know a bit about Jack Kirby and the new gods it makes a lot more sense.  I would recommend you checking it out again if you haven't in a while.

Transformers: The Movie - It was such a sad experience, to see optimums prime die.  But it has a ton of rewatchability for me.  a really good movie. . . so much better than the bay stuff!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - I saw the trailer to this movie at another movie and I didn't stop talking about the turtles trailer. . . I still  quite like it!

Mystery Science Theater 3000- This is a movie I watch over and over and I still laugh at all of the jokes!  It was a n odd choice to get a movie but it worked!

What are your favorite movies.  Check out the League and tell us.

Watch this spot for other League posts!

  1. I can't even begin to put into words how thankful I am that I got a chance to see Transformers the Movie on the big screen. It may have left scars on my brain as a kid, but pound for pound this is the single most-watched movie I've ever seen. I can easily say that I've clocked at least 350-400 viewings.

    2. I remember seeing it in the theater. What a punch in the gut! Still one of my top soundtracks of all time and led me to check out all the bands on it. This indirectly led my to one of my favorite bands: House of Lords when I saw their music video covering a Stan Bush song "Love Don't Lie"
      Funny how things work out.

  2. Had I added one more honorable mention to my list, Empire Records would have been the one. As you said perfectly: It spoke to me. Great list!

    1. Empire records was probably the first time I wanted to get something. the movie said a lot. I recently watched the directors cut and that really changes some of the movie for me. Empire is a movie that just is what it is, not great but prolific all at the same time. a great coming of age movie. . . and a great soundtrack!

If someone asked me what the 90s were like I would show them this movie!

    1. flywheels, It is in no way a good movie. but it is a movie that does seem to change with age. It becomes much better if you divorce the movie from its subject matter, it makes a much better new gods movie than a MOTU movie!

  4. Finally! Someone put the '86 TF Movie on one of these lists. Best movie evar! Ok, maybe not evar, but it is definitely up there. Lots of good ones on here, TMNT and Wayne's World were great. I loved how disconnected TMNT was from the cartoon, similar yet completely different.

  5. Very interesting list, I bet you will not see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Empire records and search for the Holy Grail together on a top ten list very often.

  6. There are few moments in the theater that could be replicated where you could actually feel the electricity of anticipation in the air. Waiting for the Ninja Turtles to come out of the shadows was one of those moments when a theater full of kids just went totally apeshit! Wayne's World made my list too. Great pick...

    1. It is so weird how ridiculously popular the Ninja Turtle franchise was at the time. kids literally went crazy for these. I am curious what the attraction really was, I mean I was in there too! I supose that they were a little easier to relate to because of their vocabulary and such. so weird, but I do remember being in the theater and such a feeling of anticipation taking over the theater.

that is the first time I ever remember going to see a movie twice in the theater!

  8. Great list. Wayne's World was hilarious, and you've inspired me to see Empire Records (never seen it). Dunno why Star Wars didn't make it on my list; I guess it was more of a child fav than anything. Nonetheless, thanks for sharing. These Top 10 things are great, as it encourages others to check out things they hadn't noticed before.
